Totems - the evolution

Leatherhard work in progress

These pieces shown below are in the leather hard phase…a basic, somewhat dry, raw clay phase. Leather hard pieces must dry thoroughly before undergoing a bisque firing. After that, the pieces are decorated (with underglaze, glaze, slips, etc) then fired to the appropriate temperature. Depending on clay, glaze, underglaze, slip, etc., and the required temperature, there can be any number of firings….

I recently joined a new studio and it's proving to be a very fruitful space for me and my work. (Before now, I've found membership-driven studios too... frenetic... for me to concentrate. I find the diverse energy of other members, the competition for resources, and the many, on-going side conversations distracting.)

Integration series
The leather hard totem below is the second piece in a new series, Integration. It is heading toward a bisque firing.

Heedlessness series, continued
The leather hard totem below is heading toward a bisque firing.
Titled, "Message in a Bottle" it is another in the Heedlessness series. The bottle is lower left where, currently, a piece of yellow foam behind the bottle neck protects it from jolts, cracking, etc.)

As a writer and author, I often use words and stories in my work. This piece has a line of poetry by Rumi, translated from Dari to read: "Heedlessness is a pillar that sustains our world, my friend."

The base. The piece shows two figures straining to prop up the central pillar, Heedlessness.

The globe sits upon the base.
It shows an elementary map - including the Pacific garbage patch - and an equatorial "band"
of endangered marine creatures. Below that, names of landfills.

The location for the headdress...
